Book of the month: July 2021

The Book of the Month for July is…

Wonderscape
Written by Jennifer Bell and illustrated by Paddy Donnelly

Wonderscape

When Arthur, Ren and Cecily investigate a mysterious explosion, they find themselves trapped in the year 2473.

Lost in the Wonderscape, an epic in-reality adventure game, they must call on the help of some unlikely historical heroes to play their way home before time runs out.

Wonderscape is an action-packed adventure through time and space. Arthur, Ren and Cecily become unlikely allies when they pass through a portal into an in-reality game developed by Hxperion. In order to get back home, they have to complete challenges in different realms, as well as solving the mystery of the disappearance of one of the inventors of the Wonderscape. Along the way they meet and are assisted by historical characters, including Isaac Newton, Tomoe Gozen, Wangari Maathai and Thomas Edison. Will the three children be able to work together to return to their own time?

I couldn’t put this book down, which is why it’s my book of the month. It’s a fantastic read with well-developed characters, great settings and lots of action. I love the idea of an in-reality game with puzzles to solve and historical figures to meet. And the children are joined on their adventures by a West Highland terrier called Cloud, who happens to be the reason they end up in Wonderscape in the first place. I highly recommend the book for all those who love gaming or solving puzzles. As they say in the Wonderscape: “Travel with wonder”.
